Wrapping Vienna in a bucolic embrace are more than 1,700 acres of vineyards that have long been a restorative escape for nature lovers and wine enthusiasts alike. Though within the city limits, the connection to rural life is palpable along trails that wind through woodlands and rolling vineyards, and down cellar-lined roads.

A picnic lunch can be enjoyed on the trail or at a charming Heuriger, where spectacular views of Vienna are paired with nectar of the nearby vines. Grüner Veltliner and Gemischter Satz, a local wine that has experienced a renaissance in recent years, are particular favorites. Whether at the modern “Zum gschupftn Ferdl“ or the historic Sirbu or Mayr am Nussberg, Vienna’s Heuriger remain rustic roadside taverns where little has changed over the years.

A tree branch still hangs above the door to signal that the Heuriger is open, inviting guests to relax on long wooden benches and enjoy a simple meal, superb wines and laid-back atmosphere.
