It’s finally May! For many people in the United States, we enter this month without thinking too much about it. In Germany, however, it is a different story. The month of May comes with all types of traditions and celebrations! One of the most recognized traditions celebrated specifically in Bayern is the tradition of putting up a Maibaum, or a maypole. Maibäume are decorated with colorful streamers and flowers and then erected in the city or town center. At Waldsee, we also celebrated Maifest! Together we decorated a Maibaum and carried it together in a parade of sorts. Once placed in the ground, we celebrated by singing songs and dancing around the Maibaum.

Another tradition in Deutschland is Walpurgisnacht, or Witches’ Night. On this night, it is believed that witches met on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, a range of wooded hills in central Germany between the rivers Weser and Elbe. It is said that the witches would have a big celebration and await the arrival of spring.
