Munich’s Bavarian National Museum showcases the world’s finest collection of Christmas Crèches.
by Jackie Guigui-Stolberg

Hallelujah, Christmastime in Munich! Shop for Bavarian presents between the old town gates Karlstor, Sendlinger Tor, and Isartor. Hear a concert in a baroque or rococo church. See a show in a circus tent at the funky Tollwood winter festival on the Theresienwiese, site of Oktoberfest. Browse and snack your way through one of the over twenty large Christmas markets throughout the city, like at Marienplatz, as“djo-di-ri, djo-e-ho“ wafts from singers on the Rathaus balcony.

But also spend some peaceful time remembering why we celebrate Christmas in the first place: by visiting the world’s largest and finest collection of antique Christmas crèches at the Bavarian National Museum.

Collecting crèches was the passion of Munich banker and brewery-heir Max Schmederer (1854- 1917) who for many years showed his valuable collection at his home before he eventually donated all of them to the Bavarian National Museum.
