Travel to German Destinations with the World Wide Web By Brent Gregston
The World Wide Web is the armchair tourist's dream-come-true and the number of German "destinations" in
cyberspace is growing exponentially. With the click of a mouse (and a high-speed modem), Germanophiles can zip
from Hamburg to Munich, Dresden to Trier, listening to sound bites of Johann Sebastian Bach or Alpine yodeling
along the way. But actually navigating the Web sometimes resembles the vacation from hell--you spend all of your
time looking for a place and standing in line rather than experiencing it. The World Wide Web is no more logical than
Alice in Wonderland: It is a vast, unorganized encyclopedia of text, images, and sounds in which the banal and
bizarre have equal billing with the scholarly and sublime. Internet travelers, or surfers, spend a great deal of time
sifting through the chaos and keeping a record--bookmarking--the Web's expanding array of travel resources. Here is
my set own set of Web addresses with descriptions. It is not definitive or objective--no list of Web sites is--but will
give a headstart to anyone with an interest in German travel and culture. There are also sites regarding Austria and Switzerland. Gute Reise!
