Germany is mourning the loss of elder statesman Helmut Schmidt, who served as German Chancellor from 1974 to 1982. He passed away November 10, 2015 in Hamburg at age 96.
Helmut Schmidt was known as the Chancellor during times of crisis but also for leadership that laid the groundwork for the eventual unification of Germany. A member of the Bundestag, one-time party chairman of the Social Democrats, and Federal Minister of Defense, Economics and Finance under Willy Brandt, Schmidt was known for his eloquence and ready wit. He was an engaging speaker as a politician and later as co-publisher of Die Zeit and as a private citizen on the lecture circuit. Regardless of party affiliations, people seemed to esteem Schmidt and respect his opinions as former Chancellor.
For those who wish to pay their respects, the Condolence Book will be available at the German Consulate General Atlanta on Monday (November 16) and Tuesday (November 17) from 2pm until 4 pm.
