October 2015 marks the 26th annual German-American Heritage Month, which was started in 1989 by the German-American Citizens League (GACL), which was founded in 1895 in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district.
German-American Heritage Month takes place in October, since on October 6, 1683 the first permanent German settlement in America was founded at Germantown, Pennsylvania. A wide variety of events, programs, and presentations are planned for this year.
Since 1989 the event has gone national and is celebrated in other communities and states across the country. The Month has received endorsement in the past by the governors of Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, as well as the Ohio Historical Society. For the calendar of events, visit the GACL website:
